Tkiyet Um Ali
Tkiyet Um Ali is a non-governmental organization, has been established since 2005, and a first national initiative of its kind in Jordan to fight hunger in Jordan and provide food security to the poor. Initiated, and chaired by HRH Princess Haya Bin Al-Hussein in memory of Her late mother Queen Alia Al-Hussein (Um Ali), the Tkiyet is inspired by the Islamic concept of providing aid for the poor and strives to fight hunger through providing daily meals for the poor and hungry, delivering food supplies on a monthly basis to poor families across the Kingdom as well as train and rehabilitate them in different fields in an attempt to empower them and provide incomes to support themselves. ‘Food for Life’ is our motto, derived from our strong belief in the need of providing food for life to the poor, food for dignified living where every person can lead a productive and fulfilled life.
Our Vision:
Towards a "free from hunger" Jordan in 2015
Our Mission:
To feed and sustain, in cooperation with all sectors, underprivileged citizens through the provision of Food for Life, while guiding those to long-term self-sustaining solutions for empowered and dignified existence.
Our objectives:
Our objectives include:
- To identify, reach and provide food for life to as many people in need and below poverty line around the kingdom.
- To serves as a model for hunger alleviation in Jordan and build an initiative where all sectors and individuals who value humanity are involved in assisting the country’s hungry.
- To encourage poor children’s school attendance and performance by providing a daily small meal throughout the academic year to public schools.
- To empower the underprivileged through rehabilitation and training in different fields hence providing employment opportunities through marketing their services.
Program Scope:
The following developed programs at the Tkiyet are as a first step towards a comprehensive and prolonged strategy for fighting hunger in Jordan and empowering the underprivileged. Our programs include:
- In-House Feeding Program:
This program ensures the provision of 350 daily meals for beneficiaries at the Tkiyet’s premises. All kitchen and cooking facilities are incorporated within our premises and specialized staff is in charge of preparing, serving and packaging meals with top quality standards.
- Food Packages:
As a main program of Tkiyet's food aid projects, this program focuses on delivering food supplies to at least 3000 poor families per month with an estimated net monthly income of 20JD’s after deducting rent fees. These supplies, in Tkiyet customized packages, are sufficient for the period of one whole month and each food package is estimated at the costs of 30JD, 50 JD and 70JD depending on the number of family members. Food packages contain 27 different foods that entail all basic nutrients and weigh 73kg, 84 kg, and 105 kg respectfully. Food packages are distributed to beneficiaries around the Kingdom focusing on areas considered as poverty pockets in Jordan.
- School Feeding Program:
Under the supervision of specialists in nutrition, the Tkiyet will provide simple meals for public school children with poor circumstances on a daily basis to motivate their attendance to classes and enhance their concentration and decrease street selling in search for food. This program will start beginning of the school year 2006/2007 and is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Education who has already started in the school feeding program since 1999. Tkiyet will focus on the schools that are not covered by the government's program and meals include 50 grams of high vitamin and mineral biscuits and a piece of fruit and dates.
- Training and Rehabilitation Program:
Mobilization of those of low-income communities is a major challenge that requires concerted efforts by all sectors of our society. The Tkiyet will adopt training programs in different fields that serve the 20 areas in Jordan considered as poor and underprivileged. As we train and empower the poor and unemployed, develop their skills and provide them with hands-on experiences, the Tkiyet will market their services and initially offer them the means and tools for implementation. This project will be a start to address social capital investments and addressing this target groups’ needs, enhancing their capabilities and providing them with long term self-sustaining solutions.
