CARE International is a global poverty fighting charity. Our programmes tackle the deep-seated causes of poverty, not just the consequences.

CARE International UK is a global poverty fighting charity with a difference. You may not have heard our name before? That is because we spend every penny where it is needed most. 94p from each pound you donate goes directly towards our life-saving work in 84 countries worldwide. With more than 60 years’ practical and hands-on experience, our programmes tackle the deep-seated root causes of poverty, not just the consequences. This involves working across a range of areas where people's needs are very tangible - provision of clean water, health services and teacher-training, for example. It can also involve helping people to be masters of their own situation - strengthening their ability to influence decision-makers or demand their rights to crucial services or resources. Even our best programmes can only touch so many lives. We expand our impact by influencing policy-makers around the world. When disaster strikes we are one of the first to respond, ensuring that aid gets to where it is needed most. We can do this because we’ve often been working in countries for many years. We stay to help communities rebuild their lives long after the media have gone. To bring about long-lasting change we need to be present for the long haul and develop a very strong understanding of the local context. For this reason, more than 90 per cent of our 13,000-plus staff are locally-hired, and we increasingly work alongside local organisations.

Mission

Our mission is to create lasting change in poor communities. We put money where it is needed most: 94 pence in every pound goes towards our poverty fighting programmes. That’s one of the highest rates among all the UK aid agencies.
